We teach how to use the coach/pupil method in rifle instruction.Our NRA Rifle Instructor Training course is designed to develop NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course. NRA Rifle Instructor Training begins with the NRA Basic Instructor Training class, which must be completed first. Both classes together form the required course for NRA Rifle Instructor certification. (You are not considered an NRA Certified Instructor until the NRA Training Department processes your application and issues your instructor credentials.)

Prerequisites

The Instructor candidates switch roles in the coach/pupil method to teach rifle shooting.To enroll in the NRA Rifle Instructor Training class you must:

  1. complete our NRA Basic Instructor Training class,
  2. send us an application to the class, an NRA Pre-Course Questionnaire, and payment of the current class fee, and
  3. achieve satisfactory scores in an NRA Pre-Course Qualification that we conduct for promising potential Instructor candidates.

Rifle Instructor Pre Course Qualification Test

In your Pre-Course Qualification you must: 1. achieve a score of 90 percent or higher in a written examination and 2. have a minimum passing score of 80 out of a possible 100 points in firearms handling, shooting competence, and firearms safety evaluation. 

The NRA states that "Only those candidates who achieve satisfactory scores in the pre-course qualification, and who meet other specified requirements for NRA instructors, are eligible for certification." Here is the basic Rifle Instructor Pre Course Qualification that we may modify, adapt, and apply at our discretion.  

Now the coach instructs the pupil to shoot a rifle from the sitting position.All NRA instructor training is a two-part course. The NRA Basic Instructor Training class is the first part of that two-part course and is Lessons I-V of every course. The discipline-specific class is the second part of that two-part course and begins with Lesson VI.

Class Description

This NRA Rifle Instructor Training class proceeds through eight lessons that teach you how to conduct the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting course step by step using the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course Outline and Lesson Plans, and how to teach rifle shooting on a basic level. NRA Rifle Instructor Training concludes with the Rifle Instructor Examination and other preliminaries to certification by the NRA.

  8. Teaching "Rifle Lesson V: Continued Opportunities for Skill Development, Using Course Evaluation, Performance Requirements Checklist and Examination"
